The Program for Architectural and Engineering Drawing Technicians provides training at the technical level in architectural and engineering drawing for students with a ninth-grade diploma, for university students who wish to complement their education with architectural or engineering skills, to professionals who work in public and private institutions, or to people who are simply seeking to acquire or improve their knowledge in architectural and engineering drawing.

Program Rationale

To provide training for students in architectural and engineering drawing, collaborators with architects or engineers, and assistants in professional offices and institutions. These persons will be able to provide skilled support in the workplace in related areas, procedures, processes and presentations.

The program also seeks to work with architecture and engineering students to improve their technical and graphical knowledge.

Course characteristics

The program has a duration of two years, consisting of six 4-month periods, each covering five topics.

Training is divided into Technician 1 and Technician 2 levels, each with three 4-month periods and 15 topics.

Methodology

Classes are delivered by architects or engineers, and their content is 30% theoretical and 70% practical, including the completion of tasks, short examinations and architectural projects.

In addition, the program seeks to boost creativity using modern 2D and 3D rendering programs in computer labs.

Schedule: Mondays and Fridays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturdays from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon 

Frequency: one day a week, per subject; a complete block of subjects requires classes three days a week.

Duration: two years. First year: Technician 1 (15 topics, five per trimester). Second year: Technician 2 (15 topics, five per trimester).

Objetivos

Technician 1

  • Provide technicians in architectural and engineering drawing with adequate knowledge for their field of work.
  • Understand architectural and engineering drawing systems.
  • Develop solutions for drawing problems.
  • Apply current and appropriate technical tools to solve drawing problems.

Technician 2

  • Provide senior technicians with high-level architectural and engineering drawing skills.
  • In-depth development of techniques for drawing plans, 3D modeling, rendering, construction processes, and electrical and mechanical installations.
  • Understand different regulatory systems and construction standards; understanding of processes of submitting plans and obtaining permits in architecture and engineering.
  • Apply knowledge and tools to calculate materials and construction budgets.

Perfil profesional

At the end of the program, students will be able to perform as assistants in architecture or engineering offices, with good psychomotor skills and creativity in drawing, preparing scale models and plans, presentations, and budgets, as well as the ability to use modern computer programs and manage paperwork.

Where is the Program taught?

The Program is taught at the ITCR School of Architecture and Urbanism, located in the Campus Tecnológico in Barrio Amón, San José, 9th Avenue and 5th Street; diagonal to the INVU.

What is the minimum number of courses that a student can enroll in?

The minimum number of courses that a student can enroll in is three. In exceptional cases and with reasonable justification, a student may be allowed to enroll in only two courses.

How can a student enroll?

Enrollment may only be done online; the FundaTEC link for enrollment is: www.inscribete.co.cr/fundatec. Click on the "Sign up here" link in the upper right corner of the page, and then on the link for the School of Architecture and Urbanism and finally on the option for the Program for Technicians in Architectural and Engineering Drawing. You may then choose the courses you want to take and pay with a debit or credit card.

If you do not pay at the time you are enrolling, you will have until midnight of the day on which you filled out the enrollment form to do so; otherwise, the space will be released. Payments can be made in the Web sites of any public bank (BCR, BNCR or Banco Popular), or in site of the BAC San José, by choosing the "payments" option, selecting the "universities" option and then the "FundaTEC" option, or you can also go personally to an ATM of these banks and indicate that you will cancel a payment via CONECTIVIDAD for FundaTEC.

How much does each course cost?

The cost of each course depends on the number of classroom hours it involves. For 2-hour courses the cost is ₡62,000 (sixty-two thousand colones), and for 3-hour classes the cost is ₡84,000 (eighty-four thousand colones). Each quarter has four 2-hour courses and one 3-hour course. Enrollment is free.

Is there any type of financing available for the Program for Architectural and Engineering Drawing Technicians?

At the moment there is no financing system for this Program; however, several of our students have decided to finance their studies through the National Commission for Educational Loans (CONAPE).
