The Bachelor's Degree in Sustainable Tourism Management is offered to graduates of tourism programs of university colleges and state institutions of Costa Rica that signed the Agreement on Articulation and Cooperation in Higher Education. Admission to this career does not require completion of an admissions test; an enrollment application, a diploma or certificate in the field of tourism from ​​a parauniversity, and a high school diploma are required.

This program is intended to train professionals with the ability to plan, manage and evaluate tourism spaces and projects, with a clear and comprehensive vision of sustainable development, mainly at a local level.

The career lasts four semesters and includes courses in five disciplinary fields: ecology and environmental management, social sciences, planning, business administration, and sustainable tourism. There is also a complementary training area with courses in verbal and written communication, English, cultural and sports activities, and humanistic training centers.

Perfil profesional

Graduates in Sustainable Tourism Management are managers who know about the formulation, execution and evaluation of national development policies and plans, who can identify the touristic, cultural and environmental heritages of Costa Rica. They learn about the functioning and interaction between the economic, social, cultural, political and natural systems in which tourism takes place, and have a comprehensive perspective of tourism in Costa Rica, as well as its evolution and development.

In the private sector, graduates of the Sustainable Tourism Management program have the capacity to plan, manage and evaluate tourism-related activities, and can work as consultants in the field, in addition to developing new projects and strengthening existing ones.

In the public sector, graduates’ skills allow them to manage and evaluate tourism policies, programs and projects, allowing them provide consulting and advice regarding these activities. Tourism institutions, national planning organizations, and research and educational centers have found that these professionals have the necessary tools to work in strategic and tactical planning of tourist destinations, as well as other tourism resources and activities.

At the community level, graduates can work as local development managers, so that community-based organizations, whether local governments, non-governmental organizations or other civil society organizations, can hire them for planning, management, evaluation and monitoring of tourism activities that have social and environmental impacts.

Requisitos

Admission to this career does not require taking an admission test. The following documents are required:

  • Enrollment application.
  • Official certification of courses approved in the institution in which the applicant previously studied, which must include the grading scale and the minimum grade for passing a course.
  • Original and two photocopies of the diploma or letter indicating graduation from that institution (issued by the registration office of the institution).
  • Original and two photocopies of the high school diploma.
  • Recent passport sized personal photograph and photocopy of both sides of personal identification card.
