Closing Ceremony Costa Rica 2022 FISU World Forum
The International Federation of University Sports (FISU), the Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC) and the University Sports Federation of Costa Rica (FEDEU), invite you to participate in the Costa Rica 2022 FISU World Forum to be held from December 5th through the 9th at the TEC Campus located in the city of Cartago.
This will be the 16th edition of the Forum and it will be held in a dual way (face-to-face and virtual). The central theme is University Sports as a driver of Sustainable Development. In the 2030 sustainable development agenda, sport is an important facilitator. Our organization recognizes that sport increasingly contributes to fulfill development and peace, promotes tolerance and respect, and it also supports women, youth, individuals, and communities’ empowerment, as well as contributor of goals in matters of health, education, and social inclusion.
Sports as a cross-cutting vehicle to address the most pressing challenges facing our societies today, when properly managed, can emerge as a valuable ally in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Core Topics
Health and Wellness
There is a direct link between sports, physical activity, and health. Sports is the closest topic linked to the SDG. Sport promotes healthy lifestyles and addresses the problem of physical inactivity, which is associated with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, depression, diabetes, and others. Through sports tournaments, the Physical Education Network educates the community about the benefits of regular physical activity to prevent chronic and non-communicable diseases.
Quality education
Inclusive sports educate and promote equal rights and equitable participation. Sport and education promote tolerance, diversity, and non-discrimination in school programs; offer educational and life skills opportunities. Physical education supports comprehensive education. Sport improves academic performance and achievement, leadership, and concentration skills; It motivates children and young people to study; It increases awareness of sustainability through the design of green areas in schools and universities.
Gender equality
Sport is a platform for the promotion and awareness of gender equality that contributes to the abolition of discrimination; promotes equal participation; generates positive changes in gender norms; increases the self-esteem and confidence of girls and enables them to become equal participants and leaders; provides a safe and fair environment for women; raises awareness and addresses gender-based violence and abuse; promotes better gender relations and cooperation.
Reduction of inequalities
Sport promotes equality, respect, and diversity; contributes to the empowerment of people from an inclusive approach; it can tackle inequality in hard-to-reach areas and populations. Sporting events allow us to celebrate and value diversity and address discriminatory practices. Sports venues can become platforms for inclusion and respect for diversity.
