Computer Engineering (C.E.) is based on sciences and technologies that allow the design, construction, implementation and maintenance of computer system components in both hardware and software.
The Computer Engineering Academic Area has a licentiate’s degree program that is certifying its quality both national and internationally, undergoing a Dual Accreditation Process with the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) and with the Accreditation Agency of Engineering and Architecture programs (AAPIA) attached to the Federated College of Engineers and Architects of Costa Rica (CFIA).
Misión
The mission of education in the area of Computer Engineering is to:
“Develop knowledge in the area of Computer Engineering through academic excellence and permanent evolution, characterized by quality in teaching, research and outreach activities, with a comprehensive approach in an inclusive social environment.”
Visión
The vision of the Computer Engineering area for the period of this strategic plan is:
"To be the national and regional reference for excellence in Computer Engineering, recognized as a source of knowledge, innovation, training of human talent and creation of technological initiatives."
Values
Although the TEC defines a series of institutional and personal values in its strategic planning, the area of Computer Engineering considers that it should emphasize some of these as especially important in carrying out its daily tasks, in keeping with its particular nature.
The following are defined as fundamental values for the area:

- Internal strengthening
- Multidimensional linking
Strategic focus
The strategic focus points to the key elements which the area of Computer Engineering should respect to comply with the philosophical approaches defined here – specifically, three strategic areas or pillars:
- Academic and research development: Develop a highly professional, updated group of academics, with capacity for doing research, establishing links and carrying out outreach activities, who are concerned with comprehensive training of students.
- Professional and scientific training: Develop and keep updated a program of studies that provides professionals with strong scientific and technological skills, to allow them to have a high impact in the community, while remaining socially aware.
- Linkages with society: Develop the capacity of professionals in this area to establish links and have positive impacts on different groups of society.
The importance of these strategic pillars is that the key objectives must be aligned to strengthen them, complying with the framework of the vision, mission and values that have been established. In addition, these strategic pillars are important in channeling the efforts of the Computer Engineering area to the core elements of the strategic plan, avoiding deviations and misalignments between different actors.
