The Computer Engineering career started in 1994 at the San Carlos Technology Campus, which was the first academic option for information and communication technologies in the Northern Huetar Region. It began by offering a simple diploma, and the option to complete the academic bachelor’s degree at that campus was offered in 1998.
The Computer program in San Carlos is dedicated to comprehensive training of high-quality and highly competitive human resources, and to research and development activities in computer sciences, seeking to contribute to improve quality of life conditions, in keeping with ethical standards, the search for technological innovation, and harmony with nature.
The Computing program faculty in San Carlos includes specialized professionals in the field who participate in publications, research and outreach projects, and in the coordination of software development projects which are available to the national and international community including an information technology transfer platform which is jointly coordinated with the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
As part of the program’s commitment to the Huetar Norte Region in terms of information and communication technologies, a Regional Information System has been developed, sponsored by the Japanese Embassy and the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP); this site seeks to strengthen the development of productive and governance capacities in the cantons of Upala, Guatuso, Los Chiles, Sarapiquí and San Carlos.

The San Carlos Computer program will be recognized internationally both for its quality in the training of professionals able to face a changing environment and for their research. Its staff will be highly trained and specialized in computer science, with a teaching methodology assisted by high technology, efficient administration of resources, linkages with society, and contributions to the development of a globalized environment.
